As soon as I heard about Charlie Kirk's shooting, on September 10, I knew I wanted to make something that would mean something to me. Not something specifically "Charlie Kirk" but I guess as a stitcher, making something and praying for his family as I stitch on it and as I see the piece of the wall . . that's what I wanted to do. I had no idea what I wanted to stitch but my mind kept going back to Seeking Refuge by The Scarlett House.
I've had the chart for several years, just haven't stitched it yet. I got it out and had it already kitted with linen and floss. I didn't have any empty stitching frames and I didn't want to ask Vince to make more. I figured I would look at some of the things I have on frames and see if I could take something off to empty a frame. Yesterday afternoon, Vince came downstairs and had two frames in his hand. He said "I will make more as soon as I find the oak for the side pieces. I already had side pieces for these two made." I thanked him and told him I had really wanted more but hadn't wanted to ask! Perfect timing, huh?
I was tired last night so I didn't get it loaded on the frame. When there's a new frame, I cut fabric (cotton fabric) the length of the bars and about 8" wide, serge it, staple it to the bars, then I machine baste the linen to the leaders and I'm ready to go. Doesn't sound like a lot of trouble BUT we re-arranged everything in the sewing room about a month ago. We moved some things out; moved some things in and I had never set up the cutting table, ironing table or the serger or sewing machine so there was a bit of work to be done before I could get a new project on the frame.
My plan was to get this done before noon today. While sitting and getting ready to get my day going, I looked at Facebook and saw that Tanya from The Scarlett House had posted a photo of this chart cover and had a little blurb about it. I said "OK . . that's my sign!" I got up and got everything done, including getting the linen on the frame. The linen is on the frame. There are only two skeins of DMC floss so I got those on floss tags (everything else is Weeks, with one Gentle Arts skein).
I will get a few stitches on this tonight.
I'll try to stay on track with my September stitching plans . . adding another project may mean I have to spend more time stitching and less time cooking! Think that would work? :)

Hi Judy, This is a beautiful piece. We are also praying for Charlie's family and the people who witnessed the horrible tragedy on Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI kitted this one up after a school shooting last year where I live. I can't remember if I actually started stitching it or not so may have to go pull that one out.
ReplyDeleteLOL - I shall try to do something outrageous so you can tell Vince about it. :-) I will stitch it along with you! - yes, we haven't stitched anything together in a while. I was just thinking about that when I was pulling out the box with my fall/halloween fully finished projects in it and spied the two witches stitch we did a couple years ago. I found the project bag for Seeking Refuge and it was only partially kitted up. I think I had ordered the rest of the flosses but them by the time they arrived, forgot what they go to so I'll finish that and pick some fabric and maybe get a few stitches started on that tonight or tomorrow in between the current projects (I was just taking photos of what I worked on this past week and 3 new starts! LOL) so I likely won't be real speedy working on Refuge but it will be put into the mix.
DeleteGuaranteed you will finish way before I do! :) Thanks for stitching it with me. I'm not going to start til tomorrow.
